Chapter Twelve

The next couple of weeks kept both Finn and me busy, albeit in different parts of the country and working on different things. Finn flew out to Vegas for the ACAs and collected three awards from the fan-voted ceremony. When I called to congratulate him, he, as usual, didn’t boast or gloat over such an accomplishment, but I could tell he was excited. He never expected three, and it clearly proved that he was on his way for the major awards at the major events. He did gossip a little, though, telling me that Carter was flying in to see Vanessa over Christmas. I was impressed that Vanessa had managed to keep that bit of info a secret from me. That was until five minutes after I got off the phone with Finn. Hers was the next number to light up my phone.

In the meantime, I continued to work and occasionally work out. My spare time, however, was filled with doing house stuff. I dealt with the home inspection, making utility inquiries, picking out paint swatches, and going online to look for furnishing ideas.

I took a day off work in mid-December to fly out and meet Finn in West Virginia. It was a long weekend rendezvous near our college town and the location of our wedding. We wanted to confirm all the details as it was only a couple weeks away at that point. There wasn’t much to do, but it was nice to be there in person just to see that everything was going to be perfect. It was also the last time the two of us would be alone together before the holiday and the wedding. And since we made the silly pact of not sleeping together after that weekend and before the wedding, we got in every second we could.

Our plan was to spend Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with Finn’s family in Louisville. Then, the day after, we would all drive to West Virginia to start the wedding festivities. My mother was a little upset that we weren’t going to be at her place for the holiday, but compromises had to start being made. Plus, she had my brother Lane and his wife, McEllie, there for Christmas.

A few days before my arrival in Kentucky, I sent a hand-written letter via snail mail to Finn at his parents’ home. We had never corresponded through written letter. It had always been texting and telephones. But, somehow, this seemed romantic and right to me. The letter read:

I’m sitting here watching It’s a Wonderful Life and wrapping your gifts. I have this overwhelming desire to hear your voice. But I want to write this down too. I want to write down this feeling—this feeling that it is a wonderful life. Finn, you have made me so happy. I am so excited to become your wife. There are times when I still can’t believe that we are in this moment. I love you.

***

Struggling with the loud and pushy masses in baggage claim, I paid no attention to the man who was suddenly standing next to me.
